IN
BRIEF
As early as 1988, Eric Vigne takes over two imprints
with wide circulation, "Folio Essais"
and "Folio Histoire" which had been created
three years earlier. |

In discussing
his editorial experience with Gallimard, Jean Starobinski
made the following comment on the surprising lack
of continuity between G. Lambrichs' imprint and
Eric Vigne's: "It is as if "Nrf
Essais" was chasing "Le Chemin""

A SHORT HISTORY
"Nrf Essais"
followed on from "Essais", which
Gaston Gallimard had created in 1931 separate
from "Blanche", and a substitute
for "Documents bleus". The first
imprint was run collegially as a kind of
extension of the Reading Committee, with
the Gallimard family, Jean Paulhan, Raymond
Queneau, Brice Parain and others contributing
greatly to the development of the imprint.
Gide and Benda launched the first set of
16 titles, which were published from 1931
to 1936. Alain's Histoire de mes pensées
launched another set of 229 titles up until
April 1987
Thus right up until the
1970s, the contribution of "Essais"
to the social science list of the NRF is
enormous. "Nrf Essais" has regularly
drawn on the backlist, often printing new
editions of essays written by Adorno, Elidae,
Koyré and especially the works of
Camus, Cioran and Paz.
In 1987, Eric Vigne, who had
already been actively involved in publishing
for about ten years (Maspero/La Découverte)
was approached by Antoine Gallimard to revitalise
the section, in parallel with Pierre Nora's
"bibliothèques". "Essais"
became "Nrf Essais" and were given
a cover design similar to the "Blanche"
cover. This was a way of saying that the
imprint was here to stay and was no passing
fancy. The multidisciplinary nature of the
imprint and its closeness to contemporary
issues were established right from the start.
Jean-Pierre Richard entrusted for publication
his critical studies of contemporary authors
while Jean Clair and Michel Fried investigated
modern aesthetics
Gradually the major
themes that shaped the imprint came to light,
formulated and studied in new ways, yet
still clearly framed within a theoretical
tradition. For instance:
"What does community
of citizens mean in a multicultural society?"
- " What sources have shaped our knowledge
of the holocaust?" - "What is
a master's authority based on?" - "Where
does modern art position the audience?"
- "Does the difference between past
and future come from the constraints limiting
the universe?"
