« A cosmopolitan curiosity characterises the NRF wave: Paul Claudel, Valery Larbaud, André Suarès, Saint-John Perse. From the beginning, the NRF wanted to encompass the whole world. »

"Du monde entier" is the main imprint for the publication of foreign literature at Gallimard.
It is blessed with an exceptional backlist and has remained loyal to the great writers of world literature of past decades (Roth, Bellow, Fuentes, Vargas Llosa…). Since its inception, the series promotes the discovery and recognition of new talent in France, for instance Martin Amis, Ian McEwan, Zadie Smith, Arundhati Roy, Manuel Rivas … The following titles have been recent flagships of the imprint: Le Liseur (Schlinck), Testament à l'anglaise (Coe), Sonietchka (Oulitskaïa), Pastorale américaine et La Tache (Roth), Sourires de loup (Z. Smith), Le Dieu des Petits Riens (A. Roy), Mon nom est rouge (Pamuk).
Among the titles of the imprint, approximately 35 languages have been translated and over 55 nationalities are represented among the authors (24 being European). Since 1993, many new titles bear a bright two colour photograph on the cover.

  IN BRIEF
Faulkner's first novel to be translated into French was published in the imprint "Du monde entier"
Printed on the band decorating Sanctuaire is "discovered by André Malraux, Goncourt Prize, 1933".

Some of the greatest French writers christened the imprint : Mac Orlan prefaced Döblin ; Malraux, Faulkner and the fiery Lawrence ; Supervielle, Ricardo Guiraldez ; and Drieu La Rochelle, Hemingway…

The cover layout of the imprint has changed several times. The current logo is a photoengraving by Georges Guimbertaud adapted by the graphic artist Massin in 1961.

Other imprints devoted to foreign literature existed prior to "Du monde entier" at the NRF, such as "Jeunes Russes" in 1926 or the "Polish imprint" in 1929. Nowadays, several imprints publish foreign authors, such as " Continents noirs" for African matters and the "Série noire" for detective stories.

The Anglo-Saxon field is the most widely represented: 24% of titles are by American writers, against 11% British. Next come the Italians (8% titles), Germans (6%) and Russians (4.5%). Books by South American writers represent around 7% of the catalogue.

A SHORT HISTORY
"Du monde entier" was created in spring 1931. Foreign literature is in fashion and many new imprints are started. Since the end of World War I, particularly under the impetus of André Gide and Valery Larbaud, the NRF has been increasing the share of its catalogue devoted to foreign literature (Conrad, Dos Passos, Kafka, Svevo, Tagore…)
However, until 1950, "Du monde entier" is aimed at book lovers: the only titles published are the first editions of a number of translations published in the "Blanche" imprint. For instance, Kafka's The Trial is published simultaneously in "Du monde entier" (leading edition) and in "Blanche" (standard edition).
The imprint only became autonomous in 1950. Titles have not been numbered since 1971 (since title N°575)
The imprint has never had its own director. Members of the reading committee and outside contributors, bring their linguistic competency and knowledge of different countries' literature, thereby sharing in enriching the imprint, just as Malraux, Crémieux, Coindreau, Paraain and Queneau.
Today, Bernard Lortholary, Christine Jordis and Gustavo Guerrero, for instance, are in charge of German, Anglo-Saxon and Spanish literature in that order, with help from the people purchasing acquisitions rights, such as Dionys Mascolo, Yannick Guillou and now Jean Mattern, as well as the editorial committee of the firm.
